The Old Regime
France used to have a social pyramid that defined where people stood according to class. The First Estate was made up of members of the Church, also known as The Clergy. They made up 1% of the population. The Second Estate was made up of the Nobility. They made up 2% of the population and paid little to no taxes. Last was the Third Estate which made up 97% of the population but paid most of the taxes.
The amount of unfair treatment was enough and the Third Estate outraged. They couldn't handle this anymore which was a main cause of The French Revolution. King Louis cared more about the wealthy ones and took more advantage of those in need. The worst part of it all was that they couldn't speak for themselves. If they went against the king, they would be put in jail or killed. People didn't want to risk their lives but they had to follow orders in order to survive.
